2013 Salisbury Heartland’s Driving Tour
Discovering an Iowa Car Collection, Historic Architecture and Scenic Historic Highways
Leaving the world famous Living History Farms at 8:00, the 2013 Salisbury Heartlands Driving Tour heads west on historic Highway 6, one of the first cross continent highways in the country. The first stop will be for coffee and donuts in the beautifully designed All Saints Church in Stuart IA. Designed Build and Burned and Restored.
After viewing Iowa’s first “Freedom Rock, southwest of Stuart, our next stop will be in Greenfield, IA where we will view the Schildburg Antique Car Collection. The unique Schildburg Collection is housed in the former Ford Dealership facility.
Greenfield is also the town used in the “Cold Turkey” film featuring Dick Van Dike, Maureen Stapleton, Bob Newhart and producer Norman Lear. The plot involves advertising exec. Bob Newhart offering a tax-free check for $25,000,000 (equal to $156,510,889 today) to any city or town in America that can stop smoking, or go cold turkey for thirty days. Van Dyke a local preacher takes up the challenge and works to convince the residents of Greenfield to quit smoking and put their small town on the map, in addition to spending the $25 million. Greenfield was also the national headquarter for the 1987 Jesse Jackson Presidential Campaign
Other attractions in beautiful Greenfield include the home of the Iowa Aviation Museum, the beautifully restored historic E. EWarren Opera House, Hotel Greenwood, and the Romanesque styled Adair County Courthouse. Lunch will be served in the tree covered >>>>>>>>>>park.
The return route takes the Heartlands tour through Winterset, IA, home of the filming of the blockbuster “Bridges of Madison County” starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. Several other noteworthy Winterset locations will be presented in the Driving Tour Program. Our schedule has us back at the Living History Farms at 3:00.
